Renovation and Extension

When designing an alteration and addition to the existing dwelling, the client’s had three requests as part of their brief.  One, an attached, self-contained Granny Flat, two, a bright and airy living space for the family that would engage with a pool to maximize outdoor living opportunities and three, an enormous cellar/entertaining area with a ‘unique and individual’ touch.  Lorena Dubiniecka from Mondo Architecture worked closely with the clients to transfer their dreams onto paper and after a lengthy process with council, a set of plans were finally approved which proved perfect to complete the client’s dream home and an exciting yet challenging project for Kentdale Homes to build.

The Granny Flat required an extension to the front of the home, so careful consideration was needed into the design and build to ensure the construction blended in with the front façade of the home and enhanced the street-scape.  Built on a raft slab with timber structure and framing, brick veneer construction and a tiled roof, selections have been meticulous to ensure the old and new combine seamlessly.

The enormous rear extension comprises a kitchen/living/dining space which will open seamlessly onto a huge decking adjacent the proposed pool.  A laundry and fourth bedroom have also been incorporated into the design.  This section of the house has been built on a suspended concrete slab with timber structure and framing, brick veneer construction and a tiled roof.  Again, materials have been salvaged and selected carefully to create a flawless blend of the original and new structures.  Featuring polished concrete floor, high ceilings and custom timber windows and doors taking advantage of the Northern aspect, this space is a stunning addition to the home.

Nine hundred and fifty tonnes of dirt was removed to make way for the hundred square-metre cellar, which is yet another entertaining platform for this house.  A standard raft slab was formed, followed by the concrete walls poured in-situ which were battened and gyprocked before timber detailing was added to create the 1920’s Speakeasy feel. Comprising of an enormous entertaining room with bar, bathroom, guest area and wine storage, this cellar will be the envy of all their friends.  Under the careful direction of Interior Designer Sarah Kostarelis, this area has been converted into an exciting and unique space.

This project is a great example of updating a small, tired home into a stunning example of modern casual living.
